RIP Acadia

RIP Acadia

Think 4 lambda CUV's is overkill? Apparently, so does GM. It appears that the next-generation GMC Acadia is dead in the water. There is also speculation that the Saturn Outlook might bite the bullet as well, leaving only the Buick Enclave and the Chevy Traverse.

While the Acadia was a handsome crossover, we can't say we are too surprised at this news. After all, the Acadia isn't really a proper truck since it has uni-body construction.

Some will speculate that the cutting of products from GMC's already thin portfolio could mean that the brand is getting the axe. It would seem possible as GMC basically sells nothing more than rebadged Chevy trucks, but we don't necessarily agree. With the consolidation of GMC, Pontiac and Buick dealers, there really is no reason for any of these brands to have a very full lineup.

NHTSA Investigating Tahoe Fires

After receiving two complaints, the feds are investigating engine fires in GM full size SUVs. According to the reports, there have been two instances of engine fires in 2007 Chevy Tahoe SUVs, both occurring while the vehicles were parked with the ignition off.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a formal investigation and GM is cooperating. It is unknown how many vehicles are affected, but it could be as many as 423,000 Chevy Tahoes and GMC Yukons.

Chicago 2008: Flex Fuel, Hybrid GMC Denali XT Concept Debuts

Chicago 2008: Flex Fuel, Hybrid GMC Denali XT Concept Debuts

The El Camino returns! Well, not quite... In Chicago, GM unveiled the GMC Denali XT Concept, a car based pickup featuring a flex fuel, 2-mode hybrid powertrain. This concept is GM's first hybrid vehicle (concept or production) to be flex fuel capable; pretty suprising considering GM's zeal for E85. The combination of a 2-mode hybrid system, a V8 direct injection engine, active fuel management (cylinder deactivation), a lightweight car-based platform and a lower, more aerodynamic stance give the Denali XT 50% greater fuel economy than a standard pickup truck.

The GMC Denali XT comes to the US courtesy of the boys down under at Holden. The car-based truck concept sits on the Zeta platform, which also underpins the upcoming Camaro, G8 as well as the Holden Utes in Australia. The Aussies also handled the design work for the Denali XT. The intent was clearly to make a more masculine, truck-looking vehicle than the Holden Utes. The interior makes extensive use of leather and has some very cool retro touches.

Will this concept ever hit dealer lots? As oil prices rise, the chances get better and better. These car-based trucks provide much of the utility of a truck with considerably better fuel economy. While body on frame trucks will surely remain the standard for those who rely on trucks for towing, a unibody ute like the Denali XT is a compelling choice to those who use their trucks more recreationaly.

GMC Yukon Hybrid Super Bowl Ad

Posted Feb 07, 2008 @ 11:06 pm

GMC Yukon Hybrid Super Bowl AdDuring the Super Bowl, GMC ran a 1 minute commercial for the new Yukon Hybrid. The ad featured clips from the 1976 animated short Sisyphus by Marcell Jankovics. While an animated figure pushes a boulder up a hill, the narrorator asks:

Why push? Why change? Why grow? Why dream? Questions you don't have to ask yourself when you never say "it's good enough." When you never say "it can't be done." When you never say "never."

Hit the jump to see the ad for yourself.

Tundra Wins Motor Trend 2008 TOTY

Posted Dec 21, 2007 @ 2:43 pm

Tundra Wins Motor Trend 2008 TOTYThat's right. The cam shaft snapping, tailgate breaking, transmission shaft seperating, butt-ugly Toyota Tundra has won Motor Trend's Truck of The Year award. The Tundra beat out the HD versions of the Silverado and Sierra as well as the Ford Super Duty line. The least capable, least reliable, worst looking truck won. It would appear that the Motor Trend awards go to the car that spent the most on advertising, which definately cheapens the CTS's Car of The Year Award. Luckily these awards are meaningless.

GM Selling Medium Duty Truck Unit To Navistar

Fare thee well GMC Topkick and Chevy Kodiak. Certain assets, intellectual property and distribution rights for the production and sales of those two medium duty trucks are set to be sold to Navistar. A subsidiary of International Trucks, Navistar was the engine supplier for Ford's Super Duty trucks... until their engines caused flames to shoot out of the tail pipes and Ford dumped them.

The Navistar GM deal is currently an agreement of principle. That basically means they have agreed on the overall terms of the sale, but the exact details have yet to be worked out. The deal is expected to be finalized in the coming months.

Continues after the jump...

Due to increasing costs of raw materials, the General has decided to raise prices on nearly every vehicle. The price increases average out to 1.5%. Some vehicles, such as the Chevy Malibu LS, will see no increase in price. On the other hand, Cadillac XLR will jump a whopping $1,500. Don't even try running out to your favorite dealer to snag a car before the price goes up. These price increases are effective immediately.

Press release after the jump...

GMC Terrain Coming In MY 2009

Posted Dec 20, 2007 @ 11:57 am

GMC Terrain Coming In MY 2009The GMC lineup will be one vehicle larger come the 2009 model year. GMC is slated to receive its second CUV, the Terrain. The 2009 GMC Terrain is not to be confused with the GMC Terrain that is about to go on sale in the Middle East. The Terrain in the Middle East is a rebadged Saturn Vue / Opel Antara. The Terrain bound for North America will be built off the an updated version of the Theta platform, which will also underpin the next gen Chevy Equinox.

GM has been much critized for its lazy "badge engineering", but the Equinox and the Terrain should look significantly different, as each will receive unique sheet metal.

The GMC Terrain will in a sense replace the Pontiac Torrent. As the General attempts to realign its brands, Pontiac will lose its only truck (if you care to call a CUV a truck) and refocus its attention on performance cars.
